Speaking of ways that things can be hidden in plain sight, I got an email tip from Kim Komando on a program called HidePod-quote:
Is this iPod hiding porn? Q-How can I check if my son has hacked his iPod touch? I'm worried that he's hiding porn behind the calculator. I've searched the Internet, but couldn't find any help. A-I assume you want to know if your son installed HidePod. This program is designed to hide videos, programs and photographs. HidePod was developed for the iPhone and the iPod touch. In order for HidePod to run, the touch or iPhone must be "jailbroken." Basically, jailbreaking a touch or iPhone lets you add unauthorized software. It is free and relatively easy to jailbreak a touch or iPhone. HidePod masquerades as a calculator. The calculator appears by default on the touch and iPhone. After you open HidePod, you enter a code using the calculator controls. Then, the program opens. It lets you browse a secret collection of programs and media files. HidePod is designed to be covert. So the program isn't going to advertise its presence. But you can try to discover it. You can try to guess HidePod's pass code. It is a string of numbers enclosed in decimal points. Open the calculator, enter ".8008." and see if HidePod opens. This is the default password. You may also try your son's birthday or other significant numbers. Don't forget the decimal points at the beginning and end of the number. I wouldn't waste too much time guessing numbers. Your efforts will likely be fruitless. If you don't enter the pass code, HidePod functions like the calculator. So, HidePod doesn't reveal itself. There may be better ways to find HidePod. But I'm not familiar with HidePod. After all, I'm not hiding porn on my iPhone! Now, HidePod is not a free program. You must pay to use it. The developer accepts payments via PayPal. So, your son would need a PayPal account to get the program. I'm sure your son could find a way to buy the program. There is an easy way to find out if your son has purchased HidePod. Each installation is tied to the touch's or iPhone's serial number. And, the developer has left open a back door. On HidePod's site, you can look up registration keys by serial number. This is intended to help buyers reinstall the program if something goes wrong. You'll need to find the serial number for your son's touch. That's easy. Look on the back of the iPod. Or, the iPod box lists the serial number. It could also be on the sales receipt. You can view the serial number from inside the touch as well. Just open Settings. Touch General and select About. The serial number will be listed. Enter the serial number on HidePod's site. If a registration number is returned, your son is hiding something. If a registration number is not returned, he probably didn't purchase HidePod. Of course, he could have a pirated copy from a file-sharing network. Just so you know.
