I am the TRUE VINE – the Message reads, I am the REAL VINE. This metaphor Jesus uses is the seventh of the great I AM'S in John’s Gospel. Why did Jesus use the imagery of a vine? We often hear, you are what you eat, so eat well. I have spent some considerable time holding a bunch of grapes in my hand thinking how God holds me in his hand, as grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart, He is holding my heart. The question that arises is what condition is my heart? Do I need heart surgery? As I surrender daily, moment by moment, to the great Physician the condition of my heart is renewed into the design that God created me to be. The vital and necessary connection which exists between Christ and me is being generated. But, my faithfulness and obedience to the TRUE VINE, the REAL VINE, produces the fruit of the vine. All Christians need pruning; if fruitless removed, if bearing fruit pruned to become more fruitful. As I gaze upon the bunch of grapes, the fragility of life and transience of my circumstances show God’s faithfulness and His providence. Each grape looks like a blood cell. Researchers proclaim that grapes are profound heart and blood vitalizing food. But their nutrients come from the roots through the branches. Therefore, it is vital to abide in the TRUE VINE, the REAL VINE. Why did Jesus use the imagery of a vine?

What an interesting question... I think it has to do with the magnificent clusters of sweet fruit that the grape vine grows. If we are not attached, we cannot bear fruit or multiple fruit clusters like the grape. I think we attact others by the blood of Jesus and become filled up as it were with His sacrifice. As love is what motivated Him to die on the cross, we too are to be full of love and brim with the blood of His sacrifice. We are a beautiful thing to behold as we grow our fruit stemming from our connection to the Vine. The vine also indicates a type of the Holy Spirit that in massive quantities, it quite intoxicating, filling us and other believers around us with joy. I had the opportunity to cut grapes on the vine in the harvest. It was so beautiful to see the translucent like cluster so ripe and bursting from within. We are like that, bursting from within, because of our great Lord from whom we draw spiritual sustenance and life. Great and uplifting question!

All Christians need pruning; if fruitless removed, if bearing fruit pruned to become more fruitful. Actually there is a difference between pruning and cleaning. Removing branches that do not bear fruit is called cleaning. Cutting back the fruit bearing branches is pruning, and causes MORE fruit to be produced. There is no difference between the branch pruned off and the ones that are kept. My MIL used to have a vinyard in her back yard. Dw grew up knowing all about pruning and cleaning.
