Just wondering, has anyone obtained a copy of their credit report thru this site? Is it pretty reliable?(meaning, do they provide a copy of your report from all three sources...equifax(?), transunion, and what's the other one.....?

Also, why the monthly charge?(I know you can cancel after the trial period). Once you have obtained a copy is it really necessary to pay for monthly service? Any other info you can provide about this site.

"Freecreditreport.com" is a credit monitoring service, that's what you're paying for each month.

If you want a truly free credit report that the government has legislated that we're entitled to, go to annualcreditreport.com. You are entitled to one from each the three major sources in a rolling year, meaning if you get all three today, you won't be entitled to another one until a year from now. Most financial gurus recommend that you look at only one to start with, and if you don't see any red flags, order from one of the others in 4 months, then from the last one 4 months later, etc. By the time the year rolls around, you will be entitled to access the first one again, and so on. (If you see any red flags, you may want to consider checking at least one of the others.)

Yeah....some MORON came up with something that I scratch my head over...

FreeCreditReport.com is NOT free....

but, they base their entire premise on the idea that it is....going so far as to CALLING themselves something that is entirely inaccurate....

Well the CREDIT REPORTS are free. However, they sign you up for the credit monitoring service. So that is their hook, they are doing what they said they would, they are disclosing the fees (they have to) but they are also banking on people not noticing and not cancelling in a timely manner.

Yes, not exactly what I would call truth in advertising, but still I think it's a pretty smart (in a devious kind of way!) marketing strategy--and you gotta love their commercials with the catchy jingles and the poor guy singing about the situations he gets into because of not monitoring his credit!

Is there a way you can check your credit for free from overseas? It seems you cannot access the site outside of the United States.

I had a credit monitoring service that was paid for by a former employer (they had a computer stolen with a bunch of our personal data on it). It was kind of interesting to use the monitoring tools, and watch how your credit score flucuated as things changed. I don't remember who that service was through, I'm thinking it was Equifax.

When that expired I tried the FreeCreditReport.com service. I decided it wasn't worth the monthly fee. It was a pain to actually get them to cancel it... you have to call to cancel, can't do it online. Then you get pressured by the phone rep to stay with it.

The main reason you want to monitor your credit report is to catch red flags of someone else using your identity. While the monitoring of your credit report does not protect you from identity theft, it can help detect it, and with the right service stop it before your credit is used. That's why you should have 24/7 monitoring - this can help catch it when someone applies for credit in your name at another location. But keep in mind this is "ONLY MONITORING", and only watches the financial end of identity theft. It don't cover SSN, medical identity theft, drivers license, or criminal identity theft. For more information visit Stolen Identity Report . And Yes, if you want the free report - go to Annual Credit Report
