Hopefully it's okay to start a thread on this. I think there may be a cloth diaper thread already but I was afraid this question would get lost in it. Anyway... We cloth diaper and for the last few months, I've noticed my baby gets a rash around her waist every now and then. I thought maybe it was because I switched detergents so I went back to Dreft; I thought maybe it was because I hang the diapers and covers out to dry sometimes so I've stopped that; I thought maybe I need to do an extra rinse cycle so I've done that...and today she has another breakout. To get rid of the rash, I just put her disposable for the rest of the day and overnight. The rash is pretty much gone the next day. It's mostly on her belly but sometimes she will get a little on her back. It doesn't seem to bother her. I thought I might try cutting a 3-inch wide strip of fleece and wrap it around her waist, then put the diaper on. But other than that, I'm stumped. FYI we use Chinese prefolds (diaper service quality) and prowrap covers. I change her diaper about every hour except during the night (she is double diapered for overnight and I've never noticed the rash first thing in the morning--it's usually during the day). Thankfully her bum isn't affected, just around her waist.

Thanks for posting, Sandy! There's no elastic to rub (it's covered in cloth). We went up in the diaper size recently. She is almost ready to move up to a larger cover. I do have two nylon pants covers. I haven't noticed this with those but I don't use them very often. I am going to try to use them more and see if that works. They are a bit larger than the prowraps. The rash area is probably a good 2 to 3 inches wide and it varies in position (sometimes more on the right or left side or center, sometimes higher than others, etc.). Also, her legs are fine, otherwise I would wonder if it was the fabric covering the waist and legs. Another detail I didn't mention was that I think I noticed this after she started eating solids. So I wondered if her urine content would be different enough with solids to cause this? Could it be a food allergy and just coincidence that it clears up after having a disposable diaper on? I'm leaning towards "no" because there's nothing I can think of that I would have only fed her near the times of the breakouts but I'm willing to consider it.

What kind of rash is it? Is it just red skin, or are there tiny bumps? If there are tiny bumps, it could be a heat rash. Cloth diapers do breath better than disposable, but they are definitely more fabric. There were a few times in the summer when my daughter would get a rash with tiny red bumps on her lower back where the top of diaper hit.

Sandy, I will send you a picture of the rash if/when it crops up again. Thankfully it's gone for now. You made a very good point about it not being food related. It could be the way she's sleeping. She mostly sleeps on her tummy and sometimes with her bum in the air. I'll try to make note of that next time there's a rash. Joyful, I hadn't thought of heat rash! The rash is splotchy red places and most of the time there are tiny bumps along with it (though it's more splotchy red than bumpy). When I was a kid, I got heat rash all the time. She's red-haired, blue-eyed, and fair-skinned like me...wonder if that makes us more prone to heat rash? And she's typically hot natured. We only have an a/c unit in the front of the house so her room is pretty warm (though I do have a fan in the hallway blowing air into her room so it's not really hot, just warm). The only thing that's not making any sense is that the night before last and yesterday morning was really cool...and yet she had the rash yesterday morning. But maybe she was still warm. This is making me rethink the fleece strips (I thought they would keep the area dry). Now I don't know what to do! If it's heat rash, is there a way to prevent it? I guess if that's the problem, it will go away soon since fall is (hopefully) coming. That would also explain why I didn't start noticing it until around May or June. Also, I've been using the nylon pants and the rash is better today. I'm not a huge fan of those pants but I'll have to get more covers in the bigger size soon and I might just get some more of those. They seem to fit looser, don't leave marks on her legs, and they always feel cool to the touch (so I'm thinking they don't produce much heat?). Thank you ladies for helping me think this through. I'm open to any other ideas.

It could very well be that. My daughter is fair-skinned, blue-eyed, but with strawberry blond hair. And she gets warm very easily. She has had problems with heat rash since she was born, and still gets it at 2 years old! She mostly has hers in the neck, chest, and upper back area though. The only thing that has seemed to work for us is to use the Aveeno baby lotion on the area that is affected. She will still get the rash if she gets very heated up (like when wrestling with her Daddy!) but the lotion does seem to keep the rash from getting bad during regular day time warmness. Our pediatrician just recently recommended Eucerin cream, so we might try that too.

Not sure about the rash, Tammy, but both the lotions that Joyful recommended are very good.

Thank you for the suggestions! I'll have to get some Eucerin...I've heard it could help my skin too.

Okay...the rash is back and now I'm even more at a loss! 1) I discovered the rash after having a diaper and cover on for just a few minutes (10 maybe) and ended up with a poopy diaper and not much urine. The diaper was completely dry on the area where the rash is. 2) She had this same diaper and cover on for a few minutes yesterday but I took it off to give her a bath and it was dry so I set it aside to re-use it. I didn't put this diaper on her again until today. 3) It's extremely cool here (very cool for the south anyway!) and she has loose fitting clothing on so I'm 99% sure it's not heat rash. 4) There's no bumps--such splotchiness. 5) She's been in disposable for the most part today until I put her in this cloth diaper and cover. I have two images but they're too bit to upload here. If anyone's interested, PM me your email. And yes, I'll pick up some Eucerin cream Monday at the store!

Sarah, that makes the most sense! I'm still wondering why a dry diaper would do it. Maybe the inside of the cover (which might be touching her belly since the diaper may not go all the way up in front) may be causing the reaction? It's got a plastic-y lining. Maybe it rubs? I'll try to find the corn starch for ironing (never knew they made such a thing!) but I could try regular cornstarch until I get the ironing kind. Hadn't thought of that! I kept her in cloth diapers last night even with the rash and it was almost gone before bedtime and it's completely gone today. Yay!

I just had a thought but it could not be your problem. Do you use pins to pin the cloth diaper? We found that my daughter was very allergic to the nickle in the button on her jean skirts. She would break out in a red, itchy rash around her belly button. Maybe something in the pins is irritating her little belly.

Thanks Sarah! I'm going to look for it in town first but may order it online. The link took me to the companywebsite, not the actual product. Is it just "Faultless Starch"? And is it spray or powder? Robin, that's a very good thought (especially since I have a nickel allergy myself). However, I use a snappi (which is made of plastic and I don't think it comes into contact with her skin). I'll have to remember not to ever use pins though, in case she does have my allergy. Thanks for your input!

Can you mark the diaper in some way to see if it is the same diaper? There might be something on it that you can't see.

Are the covers plastic or PUL? Some babies are allergic to the PUL.

The inside of the covers are PUL. I'll have to notice next time the rash appears if the inside of the cover is touching her skin. She hasn't done this with the nylon pants and I know the inside of those pants touch her skin. I need to find out if they are lined with PUL or not. Thanks Ryanne...I hadn't thought of that. Reach, that's a good idea too. I could just put a little dot with a magic marker on the ones that do it.

Thankfully her bum isn't affected, just around her waist. sounds like she is allergic to the waistband of whatever type of diaper cover you are using. You may want to change to just simple rubber/vinyl pants (the old fashioned kind) for covers...or at least pinning the diapers and going without a cover for a while. She may also just be getting too warm on those areas of her body.

It sounds like the rash is roughly around her waist. This is one area where clothing, including diapers, touch the skin a lot more than in other areas. From experience, this can be heat rash, soap in the diaper, the soap you use on her skin, the lotion you use on her skin, etc. For me it was the dryer sheet fabric softener in my clothes. A couple of years ago I could no longer stand to wear my cotton turtlenecks because my neck itched and turned pink. It wasn't too dramatic so I didn't know what it was. My dermatologist told me to stop using the fabric softener. The other thing you will want to check is if any of the products that end up in contact with her skin have been reformulated. Sometimes the product is the new and improved version, but sometimes you aren't told.
