My 10 year nursing career was abruptly ended in '96 when I became paralyzed. God has rehabilitated me, and all praises to HIM because I can walk again. Yet there are so many obstacles before me, I am permanently disabled because of residule nerve damage and mounting side effects of being sedintary during my wheel chair phase. My question is how do I move forward from here? I was the caregiver in a multi-bed rehabilitation facility, now I currently visit the same type of facility for physical therapy. I feel as though not being able to work I'm letting my husband (partner teddybear, as I call him) down. He's 95% the sole provider for us and our 4 kids with 5%coming from my disability sipen. Is there a new career out there, that can work with my limited abilities? Staying in prayer and waiting for input...

I have a couple of suggestions:

Have you been to see a career counselor - perhaps one who might specialize or has experience helping someone with a disability reenter the workforce? You have such valuable skills - perhaprs there is still a place for you in that field. Perhaps you might be able to do something that is related to that field (educating other nurses, being a patient advocate or something else). It might require a bit more training if you move into something a bit different, but can also be a chance for you to use different parts of yourself.

I've noticed that the state and federal governments have often been very accomodating and welcoming for people who have disabilities. Perhaps you can look into a job with them.

Also, have you tried contacting the National Center on Workforce and Disability?

http://www.onestops.info/

They might have some information that might be helpful to you.

Have you tried contacting your state's or county's employment office? You might want to try talking to them and explaining your situation. They might have tests that you can take that will help you determine what interests you (if you don't know) and explore new options - and they can also help you with formulating a plan to get there.

Thank you for the suggetions. I hve been through the local workforce center, but they said with my therapy schedule, and constant medical care, many potential employers will shy away from me.They'd look at the times I'd need off in comparision to the excellent quality of my work skills or personal efficiency.

NOTE: I've edited this so that it contains a lot more information than it did previously.

--------

I'm sorry to hear that they were so pessimistic about your chances . But, I hope you are not totally discouraged since with God all things are possible. In fact, I used to do a lot of work with a center that assists employees with the proper equipment that they needed to do their jobs. It isn't open to the public, or I'd share that information with you - but having had that experience, I'm trusting that God will open the door for you to get a job. I've seen people with all manner of disability employed - some that had disabilities more severe than what you are describing. Yes, the job search might take longer and you might have to consider starting a home-based business (such as freelance writing) that would allow you to be more flexible - but I'm trusting that you will be able to find something.

It seems to me that often, the biggest obstacle that has to be faced is in the mind of the employer. They need to know that having a physical disability doesn't affect the person's mind. If you need physical accomodations or special equipment to help you do a job, often organizations that have a lot of money are more willing to make the accomodation than those that don't.

Also, have you seen this program? Do you live in the U.S. If so, perhaps this will be of help to you? It sounds like they have employers lined up that will hire people who have disabilities?

http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10061.html#program

or these (the last link looks especially good):

http://www.enableamerica.org/pdfs/disabilityemployment101.pdf

A couple of other thoughts: does your church have some sort of counseling center - where they might be able to do some vocational counseling with you? They might know of some very good resources and the added plus is that they might be able to prayerfully help you with discovering your gifts. Or maybe some others on this board might be able to talk with you about home-based opportunities? There has to be someone who needs a good employee who might need a little extra flexibliity.

If I think of anything else I'll let you know, but I will pray for you that you'll be able to find someone who will be able to help you.

Since you have a lot of time on your hands I would check out books from others that have severe disabilities and have overcome to do great things. There are good christian autobiographies that you may be able to check out at your church library and their are secular autobiographies that you can check out from the local library. This just might give you some ideas of where to start and some encouragement along the way. <IXOYE><

Your state department of vocational rehabilitation should be able to help you.

There most certainly are options for someone with years of experience in the health care field. Look into administration rather than being a practicing floor nurse. Look into consulting or insurance companies who need someone with insight from the trenches. Look into adjusting or claims processing. Maybe even talk to some small local family practitioners to see if anyone needs a office manager.

You might want to talk to a career counselor or adviser, I can think of dozens of things you could consider.

Have you considered home schooling your four kids during this time? This activity would keep your brain active, and provide returns of eternal value. FWIW, my career field is volatile, and there have been periods when we lived on my sweetheart's income. Through it all, though, we found ways to raise our children ourselves. "Tag-team parenting."

can you teach? perhaps you can teach a class at a community college if you have a nursing degree. or you can teach online, then you wouldn't have to leave the house. www.ed2go.com is looking for instructors; why not apply.
