Hi there!
My friend is looking for appropriate books for her 10 year old son. My children are grown and my granddaughters are pre-schoolers, so I'm not much help. Can any of you give us your recommendations? What do YOUR boys enjoy?

Thanks in advance!

If you're looking for something that's plain old fun, something they'll completely enjoy, I'd recommend The Dangerous Book for Boys. Seriously. We bought it for our grandsons (8 and 6) last Christmas, and they can't seem to put it down.

My boys just turned 11 and they have been reading The Chronicles of Narnia, the RPM Series (Christian Books), Luke 2:52 Series which is a whole group of books my boys like-Heroes and Bad Guys of the BIble, Angels & Demons of the Bible, Weird & Wacky Bible Stuff-I think there are about 10 titles

Just some ideas.

The Magic Tree House series is appropriate for both boys and girls. My 9 year old ds, 10 year old dd, and 11 year old nephew have all enjoyed these.
The Boxcar Children series.
The Matt Christopher series

How about things like the Hardy Boys?

My suggestion: Take the kids to the library. Talk to the librarians. Ask them for books that 10 year old boys like. Good librarians at least have ideas and can point you in the right direction. And with borrowing them from a library, if you don't like them, you can take them back and you're not out any money unless of course they are overdue!

Blessings,

Garsy

Kids are at different levels and have different interests but these should be appropriate:

*Encyclopedia Brown mysteries (a series)
*Rascal (true story of a boy and his raccoon)
The Phantom Tollbooth (a fantasy using language as a source of adventure)
Homer Price (boy's adventures in his home town)
Swiss Family Robinson (classic about a family marooned on an island)
The Door in the Wall (boy is made lame by disease and can't become a squire..how he contributes)
The Wind in the Willows (classic frog and toad silliness)
A Wrinkle in Time (children travel through time and space to save their father and the universe)
The Jungle Book (classic..boy raised by wolves in the Indian jungle)
Farmer Boy (Alonzo Wilder's boy adventures)
The Hobbit (Lord of the Rings prequel)
*Henry Huggins books (a boy and his dog have adventures)
*e.b. white books (Stuart Little, Trumpet of the Swans, Charlotte's Web)
*my side of the mountain (boys adventure on his own in the wildness)
the mixed up files of mrs. basil e frankweiler (brother and sister run away and live in the Metropolitan Museum in NYC)
alice in wonderland
a fairy tale by george macdonald
*tall tales about John Henry, Paul Bunyan, or Pecos Bill
The Indian in the Cupboard series
biographies of great men, scientists, and inventors
Incident at Hawk's Hill (boy cared for by a badger)
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH (super intelligent rodents save a field mouse and her family)
The Cricket in Time's Square (a country cricket makes friends in New York city)
*the Soup books (2 boys always getting into trouble in Depression era)
The Wizard of Oz (Dorothy trying to get home or an allegory of the Progressive party?)
Babe (well done, pig)
Mary Poppins (although it's @ 20 years since I read them and I remember feeling a bit odd during book 2 or 3...like my parents may not approve of something small but can't remember why. Doctor Doolittle falls into this also, at some point in the series they talk about evolution in depth. Definitely both very imaginative, fun books which need a parental read first).
*The Great Brain (true story of the adventures of 3 brothers growing up in turn of the century Utah)
The Incredible Journey (3 animals attempt to find their missing owners)
Sounder (another dog book)
Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet series (flight to Mars)
A Child's Garden of Verses (famous children's poems)
Captain's Courageous (snobby boy learns work and respect on a fishing boat)
All kinds of fairy tales and myths:
The Green/Red/Blue Fairy Book
Hans Christian Andersen
La Fontaine
the Grimm Brothers (selected)
the Norse Sagas
The Iliad/Odyssey

* I starred the ones that I think are particularly fun for this age.

Auben's list is great!

Also consider Jack London. My nephew loved his books at that age.

Tamara's list is perfect!

Also anything by Roald Dahl - like The BFG, James and the Giant Peach, The Twits, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Magic Finger.

Beverly Cleary is a good author too - Especially the Ralph S. Mouse books.

Blessings,

Garsy

My son is 12 and reading The Warrior Series, it is about cats. He stumbled upon it at Barnes and Noble. There are about 5 or 6 books in the series. He is also reading a book about dragons but it is in the pit of his backpack and I cannot find it. I will ask him in the morning. My son also LOVES nonfiction & biography's, when he was about 3 yrs old and we sat for story time he would say "Is this real?" If I said no he would walk away but if I said yes he would stay.

Yes, I think my older son (9) just finished reading about Scourge the Warrior (cat) and really enjoyed it. I haven't read it though so I didn't include it.

Another son (8) just finished The Spiderwick Chronicles (all the books) and is moving on to Judy Blume's Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.

Some book series that I have enjoyed reading that I think were good for boys are The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini, Hank the Cowdog books By John Erickson, The Redwall book series By Brian Jacques, The Artemis Fowl series by Eion Cowlfer, The Boxcar Children By Gertrude Chandler Warner, The Lord of The Rings Trilogy, The Trailblazer books series by Dave and Netta Jackson, The Incredible Worlds of Wally Mcdougal, and Bloodhounds inc By Bill Myers, and thats just to name a few and if he thinks those are boring you could books by Robert Louis Stevenson, The Swiss Family Robinson, The Side of the Mountain trilogy
Tom Sayer, The Last of The Mohicans and Robison Crusoe.

Also you can go to CBD books My Mom got a lot of the books I've read from this site.

BTW To find any of those books series I've mentioned just google their titles. Also about the warriors books that everyones talking about I've read all of them but the recent ones and their are like three or four different series besides the first one.

I am a librarian (albeit a very new one), so I have a bit of experience in this area. One great series that boys will like is the Kingdom series by Chuck Black. It is a Christian allegory set in a fictional middle age kingdom. It has lots of action, and is written by a sunday school teacher, so it's completely clean! Another Christian series that I found good (yes, I read books that are way below my age level, just call it research!) is the Accidental Detectives series by Sigmund Brower. Young boys generally like mystery stories, and this series is great!

I just assumed that the boy you're looking for reading material for is Christian, which is why I mentioned the titles I did. I may have time to write a more extensive list later, but these two were the ones that stood out in my mind!
