Are you a natural blonde or do you dye your hair instead? Just curious as I have noticed a lot of women with blonde hair and notice that they have roots growing out, thus not a natural blonde, so I am just curious.

I'm a natural blonde (all my life) who colors over the gray -- so where does that play into the scenario?

Most but not all blondes are from the bottle.

What is is with guys and their fascination with blonde hair?

No way am I a blonde, and no disrespect to those who are but no way would I want to be one. Most of the women I have known who dye their hair blonde do so because they think it makes them more attractive to men, or more attractive to themselves. Most of the natural blondes I know base a great deal more of their self-esteem on their hair color than do brunettes, which just absolutely stumps me.

Growing up here in the South where blonde hair and blue eyes were, and apaprently still are considered the epitome of feminine beauty kind of soured the milk for those of us who are brunette. I remember one girl in high school who had brown hair and seemed to get little noticed by the guys; she came to school a wheaten blonde one day and the guys fell all over themselves trying to talk to her. She thought all that male attention was great until she realized they weren't enamored of her so much as they were of her hair color- they could care less about what she thought or what her interests were.

Of course as we've all gotten older I've noticed that blondes do not age as well as brunettes, especially those who grew up in the suntan worshipping 60's and 70's before there was any impetus to use sunblock and sunscreen. Fair-complected people have skin that is more delicate, more easily damaged. That goes for fair hair too- blonde hair requires a lot more conditioning and protection than brunette hair, and thins more quickly with age.

There's more that glitters than just gold.

Wow. For someone who means no disrespect I definitely sense some anonmosity against blondes ...beyond the normal blonde jokes I might add... I am a natural blonde, consider brunnettes, redheads and some chemically-enhanced colors done tastefully beautiful in there own way.

You made some real generalizations made throughout your comments. Here's the reality:

Natural blonde -- didn't date a lot in college, didn't sun worship, which is probably why I look to be in my mid 30's although I in my mid 40's. I suspect anyone who chose a tan over there health shows the signs as they age.
I have a brain and accomplishments and generally men that are attractive to me are so as much for my intellect as my hair. And you know what, if a guy only is interested in me for my looks...we'll he's just not going to make he grade in the long run, anyway.

I'm glad you piped in but was kind of taken back by your comments.

If you look at women who color their hair shades other than blonde, you'll see roots from time to time as well. It's the result of dying, not of being a particular color naturally.

Also, the sun lightens our hair if we're exposed to it for long periods of time. Even if we don't dye our hair, the newer hair closest to the roots will be darker simply because the sun hasn't lightened it.

Yep. I have blonde hair and blue eyes (but hardly think I fit the description mentioned above ). My hair is dark blonde, but when it was longer, the tips of my hair were almost white they were so light. Also, my eyebrows are quite a bit darker than my hair, making it look like I dye my hair even though I don't. Eh... who cares if it's natural or not?

I'm a natural blonde. As a child my hair was light blonde and as I got older my darkened slightly (same thing happened to everyone in my family, though they are all brunettes now and my hair has stayed blonde). I will dye my hair on occasion but I always stay a blonde.

PaleHawkWoman - I always enjoy reading your posts and as you said, you meant no disrespect, but that post was disrespectful and hurtful. We are not all like any of the people or anything you mentioned and for every person who lives up to a stereotype there is someone that defies it. That goes for any hair colour, gender, race, creed, etc.

I don't fully dye my hair blonde, but I do get blonde highlights for two reasons:

I used to have a distinctive shade of red hair that everyone loved, and then when I went through an illness, it turned a dull color.

Some kids I tutored told me they were starting to see some grey hairs.

The highlighting helps give my hair a luster.

For a season here, I won't be highlighting at all, though, because it is expensive, and I am working hard on paying off some debt that I never should have got myself into in the first place, and a haircut by itself isn't expensive, and no I am NOT brave enough to highlight it myself or let a friend do it.

I'm naturally blonde and after a few days in a swimming pool it turns strawberry blonde... that being said, in the winter it gets mousey and the roots grow in darker. And the silver threads are at the temple. This is a natural blonde who helps things along with a bottle of color now and then. Or a bit of hydrogen peroxide in the spring time.

If I could get a good tan from a bottle, I would do that, too. But alas, the legs are still pale.

Like a good German I was blond as a small child, ash brown as a teen/20s, and am dark brown now. All natural, no dyes. Freak that I am I even like my few grays and look forward to that change as well.

I think I missed my blond hair for several years growing up, mostly because I thought the ash brown was too mousy. A nice solid woody brown like my mother's seemed much prettier.

I'm a natural blond - if you don't believe me, then check the bottle in the shower.

Actually, I am medium blond. I used to lighten it, now it's being lightened on it's own. I think Memaw. refers to that as mature blond.

This would be me, as well ... except I'm a brunette with natural red highlights that have become dull and mousy thanks to chemo ... so I go once or twice a year to get blond highlights just to give my hair some shimmer (and cover the mousy grey)

I am a natural blond. My hair has gotten darker as I have gotten older. A few years ago I dyed my hair to make it lighter but I got tired of the expense of keeping it up so now I am just a darker blond with a few grays here and there.

I have been blonde my whole life. As I got older it got darker so I have highlited it. I now have fun putting in highlites and lowlites. I have tried going darker and it just did not fit me. I am much more comfortable in blonde.

I'm a natural blonde, though I'm just returning to it after dying my hair red for 14 years. Growing up I was white headed! In 8th grade or so it started to get a little bit darker. By 9th or 10th grade it was a dark blonde and I was coloring it to keep it the lighter blonde. I've had color on it ever since so there's no telling what it would look like now without any color. Except I know there's some gray that's being smothered.

I don't relate to the aforementioned sterotype either. Nor can I think of anyone else that does.

I was a blonde headed child, and it has darkened as I got older. I started adding blonde highlites to it in college to give it some jazz. My natural hair color is light brown..and bland so the highlites help add some character to it.

I am a natural blonde. When I was a kid I had white hair well into high school.

When I turned 30 it was a bit darker, but still blonde. It took about 3 years for me to get the courage to hightlight my hair. I was afraid because it is so baby fine that it would be messed up.

I started adding light highlights just for something different in my hair, as it is just blah and straight and I wanted it to look like something.

I always say it is the fake blondes that give the real blondes a bad name!

I would never dye my hair blonde. Because I'm pretty sure I won't look good! I am a natural brunette :]

I am a natural blonde. But in the last few years, I've been coloring my hair a very pretty red. I never had colored my hair in my life but wanted to be red (had strawbery blonde as a kid). I was so nervous about it that I had my husband help me pick out a color.

He loves it when its red - it looks very natural like I was born that way. We joke about his "blonde" and his "redhead" lovers (me!) and I always ask him who he likes better........his answer is "YEP"...lol

BTW I never have been a sun worshipper! Never smoked either (did a little social drinking as in my early 20's - no alcohol now). So I always get people to guess my age is at least ten years younger or more.

I'm a natural blonde. I had highlights once, but it blended in so, that once it started growing out you didn't notice it as much. When I was a little girl it used to be almost white, but now that I'm a little older (22) It's more of a honey/caramel color.

Many people have asked me if I get color put in it, since I have about 3 different shades through out my hair. I love my color and don't feel the need to dye it. The only thing I don't like is how greasy it can look after just a day of not washing it, so unlike some women I have to wash it every day.

BTW, I also am not a sun worshipper, all the young girls my age going to tanning salon are going to look alot older than I will in the next coming years!

And the comment about blondes having more self esteem than brunettes, is just plain silly!!! My co-worker is a brunette and I sometimes feel a little "blah" compared to her. Her hair is very thick, and mine is not, so it can be harder for me to work with, and somtimes doesn't look as good if I don't style it right. Just had to comment on that remark!

Absolutely, ditto for me! My hair was so light as a child that they say you couldn't tell I had hair! My mother loves my hair light - for her, the lighter the better. I will never do straight color - my hair has too many in it naturally, so the highlighting is perfect for me. I only do it quarterly, so it's not that expensive. Also, I only do it all over once a year and just do the front/top/crown the rest of the times. It keeps it healthier. Additionally, I take great care of my hair and it's very healthy - considering it's longer now than it's ever been (and I'm 47). I have NEVER been a sun worshiper, and get told nearly daily that I look like I'm in my early 30's. (that comment directed to the statement that the blondes don't age nicely)

I love being blonde, being a GEEK, and becoming a Math teacher. I can't wait until I start teaching Calculus!
