I've been unclear on whether you need to be baptised as an adult to get into heaven? I know that you only get to heaven thru Jesus Christ and belief in him dying for your sins and washing you clean. But I've heard that baptism is not a requirement too - can anyone clarify? Both my husband and I were baptised as babies (wrong) and after we became born-again Christians, we were re-baptised as adults.

I think you have it correct as baptism is always spoken of as a post salvic event. Thanks RC

I'm still figuring this out because God is deep and I am not, but God apparently "does something" when we are baptized in the name of the Triune God. I don't know that it matters when it happens, adult or not. But it seems to be important to Him, as it's mentioned more than once as something Christians are to do.

Hi RCJames, I really don't wish to derail this thread. You said: "post salvic event". Does that mean since I was baptised as a baby when I knew nothing about it, then I'm not saved?

Babies cannot express their beliefs, so if you were only baptised as a baby, you would need to be re-baptised if you belief now. That's my understanding. I'm not totally clear on it, that's why I asked, but I DO know that baby baptism is NOT in the Bible - only older children/adults were ever baptised.

All examples of baptism in Scripture take place after a person accetps Christ, in my humble opinion baptizing someone before they accept Christ is an excerise in futility. I know there are many who disagree with this, but Scripture is plain. When an adult is saved (or a teen) I always counsel them to be baptized; irregardless of any pedeobaptism event or lack thereof. Thanks RC

Baptism is a symbolic event of a spiritual change. Baptism of itself holds no spiritual consequence other than being obediant to Christ. You can dunk a million unsaved people and if they do not believe Jesus as Lord all that is going to happen is they are going to get wet. NO ceremony saves you. NO ceremony keeps you saved. NO ceremony is part of the process of salvation....or......Jesus did nothing on the cross and we all can go back to living under the yoke of the Law.

Hi RCJames, Your response implies that I am not saved. Regardless of the fact that I have accepted Christ as my Saviour; unless I am baptised as an adult I am doomed. SoninMe however, quite rightly, says that you can dunk a million people in water, unless they truly believe, all that happens is that they get wet. He sees baptism (adult or otherwise) as a ceremony, a symbolic act to denote one's acceptance of Christianity. He is so right. I could easily get baptised again tomorrow. Would that change me in any way? Did Christ need to be baptised? Had He not done so would He not have been saved?

"I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." Mark 1:8 Nothing here to imply that unless you are baptised with water you are not saved.

mvic, I think that what rc is saying is that baptism before salvation is invalid, and whether or not you were baptized before salvation, you should be baptized after salvation. (Not that everyone agrees with this.)
