I am looking into getting a backpack carrier (or two!) to use while hiking.
We have an 18 month old and a newborn, so for now I just need one for the older boy.
My husband would probably end up carrying Judah most of the time - he is nearly 6 foot 5.
Judah is almost 35lbs, so we need something that will with hold his weight too!
Any suggestions?

Jessica, we recently started small hikes with Nathan, who is over 25lbs and almost 16 months old. (Wow, your son is big!) HERE is what we got to use for Nathan. You can also see customer reviews below. It's a good product, but not overwhelmingly fantastic. Greg's back does start to hurt after a while, but it's better then holding him, and Nathan really, really likes it. He can even fall asleep in it.
Ours only goes to 40lbs, so it may not work for to much longer with your guy.

We have an Ergo (classic/old style) that I really enjoyed at that age. I even carried my 2 year old when I was 6 months pregnant. The little one stays low and against the back (I fixed mine so I was carrying him more with my hips then my back).

Yeah, the Ergo is a good carrier... their business practices... not so good.
But we use the same style of carrier with Gabby and just love it/them(we have several).

What's wrong with Ergo's business practices? I don't really know anything about them.

I suppose it depends on how far you want to hike.
I've hiked in the Ergo for 2 hours and worn it comfortably with a child in it for 3-4 hours. It's cloth so it's not meant to be left outdoors and would probably a bit uncomfortable if soaking wet (but then, who really plans to hike in the rain with a toddler?).
On the positive side it blends in better than most of the traditional hiking backpacks. You could take it to the store or to a festival with barely a glance. With practice it's easier to take on and off than a traditional one too. It also stores in a small bag rather than taking up the trunk.
We're not die-hard hikers, so portability and ease of use were more important to us. I could store it under the seat in the van.
I don't think it's tacky to tell people what you're looking for without asking them to purchase something expensive. They could get you a gift certificate to a store that carries them.
Whatever you decide, make sure you try it on before you buy. All the suggestions in the world won't make up for something that doesn't work for you.

You may want to check CraigsList or Freecycle for Keltys too. That's a brand that's been around awhile.

We had a L.L. Bean backpack carrier that worked very well. We hauled the children around on longer trips until they were about three. When they were 5 and 6 they would bring it up from the basement and get daddy to give them a ride.

I believe the Kelty 3.0 weight limit is 40 lbs.
I have a Kelty, I like it (I didn't buy it at full price, found one in great shape at a yard sale, woo!) You need to make sure you adjust the straps well or it will hurt, but otherwise it doesn't tend to (though I do find that I tend to lean forward with it on. Granted I was using it in the winter when it was too snowy for the stroller, so some of that might have overbalancing in case of ice, as with a little one on my back if I slipped I wanted to fall forward. Fortunately it was never an issue). It's also a little odd getting it off and on alone with a child in it... you have to start on a table or something unless you have a really rigid couch, because the little stand-leg for when you set it down collapses when you pull on the shoulder straps to pull it on, and it will "grab" if there is fabric or something under it. It's too unwieldy on the floor unless you want to sit all the way down on the floor, and then you have to stand all the way up.

We love our Ergos. Our twins are 20 months old, and don't weigh 35 lbs., but Ergos can go up past that weight and are very comfortable for long periods of time. (And I have no idea what the one person meant by unfavorable business practices.)

As far as I can tell after a little research, the business practices in question involves Ergo not wanting home-based businesses to sell their products anymore unless they are able to meet a monthly sales quota, exacerbated by the fact that they are trying to carry this out by attempting to force the home-based businesses to return the merchandise for a partial refund or face a lawsuit (which Ergo would probably lose, but the court costs would force the home-based businesses out of business).

I am thinking about getting an Action Baby Carrier. It seems kind of like and Ergo without the "questionable business practices." I don't see a weight limit on the site, so I'm not sure what it is.

For the shower gift they want to get us a double stroller.
So we won't be getting the backpack for awhile.
Thanks for the ideas though! I have bookmarked a couple of the suggestions for further research once we've got the money for one or two.

They are also pursuing legal action against WAHM's who make similar carriers. The WAHM's can't typically afford to fight it in court so they have to stop making/selling their product. The baby carrier industry is mostly driven by WAHM's(myself included) and Ergo is the first company to "go against the grain" and pull this sort of stunt.

I just bought an Ergo after reading this thread and I LOVE IT!! Noah is 17 mo. and he loves it. I had a Moby wrap when he was little, but HE no longer liked it from around age 1. I have a cheap frame snuggli from Walmart and we both hate it. This Ergo is used DAILY and we both LOVE IT!!!!! Wish I would have had it several months ago! It is a little tricky for me to put him on my back. But, I can carry him on my front and it doesn't hurt and we are both comfy.
