Hey, Mike. Believe it or not, I consider myself a very shy person. But truthfully, I think that's just my own perception as I've mostly grown out of my shyness. There are still things that bother me, like it's really hard to make idle chit chat with people I don't know unless they're the ones to initiate the conversation. But I dunno... I voted "I am shy when meeting new people".

Depends and Both.

There are people that would be shocked if I said I was shy and then there are others that would attest that I was shy. It depends on the situation and my comfort level.

I'm never shy With strangers, esp when I'm doing one of my sports activities. I've hiked all the way to the summit With a total stranger I met on the trail and that was a 6 hour hike. I'm good With small talk initially, but after a few meetings and all we're having are small talks, then, my shyness shows.

I can be shy With authority figures, but not always. It depends on intimidating they are. I can be shy when I'm around really outgoing women, for some strange reason. With them, I'm a chatterbox.

I am extremely shy. My boyfriend told me recently that his whole family used to think I was rude and snobbish because I didn't talk much with them if at all. That made me feel so bad that I've started making an effort to be more outgoing around them. It's hard though and I hope I'm not like this forever. :(

Take no notice. They could just as easily have made allowances and realised that they needed to help you feel at your ease with them.

I voted 'shy when meeting new people then warm up after I get to know you.' But it really all depends on who I'm with and how comfortable I feel with them although I don't ever consider myself to be outgoing.

I voted outgoing - but like Grace-N-Mercy - I see myself as shy, but others tend to see me as warm, outgoing, and friendly if a bit reserved. Mostly, I think that it depends on who I am with. Currently, I work in a place with a lot of strong extraverts. So, I basically blend into the wall - none of my personality really shows. But ... if I'm around introverts (like my last job) or people who are mild extraverts, I'll be a lot more outgoing (because it will be way too quiet - and after all - you've got to laugh about stuff at some point). I usually don't initiate conversations with people that much other than the "Hi, how are you? Is it hot enough for you?" kind of thing - which I rarely do. I'm not good at small talk. But, if someone else initiates, I'll respond - and before you know it we are having a conversation.

I voted outgoing because two weeks ago at church, I took my first orientation class, and the teacher started talking about different personalities. When I said I was shy, the whole table of people (including the teacher) started laughing and shaking their heads. I don't know why they thought that. When I walked into the room I said hi to everyone. I think I asked someone a question. I did interact with the teacher. But that's about it. Also, I voted outgoing because a friend of mine was just telling me that she admired that I seem to be able to meet people and get involved with things whereever I go. (She does this too, but she doesn't see it.) I never really thought about this until she said it - I don't walk around talking to people - but if I see something interesting happening, I'll go for it (with some caution) - then in the process I end up meeting people. And since I'm always doing something new - I meet more and more people. I like to try a lot of different things and I'm not afraid to do things by myself - so I rarely sit at home alone unless I just don't want to go out.

When first meeting someone I am really shy but once I get to know someone well I will talk their ears off.

I consider myself shy on the most part. Although, I always seem to talk to strangers with a lot of ease. A friend of mine said she thinks it's because I make eye contact and smile at people. I don't realize I do that and it's kind of funny to me considering I really do feel shy inside. I even feel kind of shy around some family.

Very, very shy - and I wish I could get over it. I can't even ring people unless I know them very well. I get panic attacks just watching other people stand up and give speeches/presentations!!!

I'm also very opinionated. The only time I get over my 'issues' is when I see an injustice - and then I show my 'hidden' side.

Thanks, Mike. I think that being online with a bunch of people I'm comfortable with has really helped me come out of my "shell" so to speak.

I'm shy and have no problem with that. It just takes me a while to get used to people, striking up a conversation with a stranger isn't a huge problem it's being around multiple people at once that I don't deal well with.
I used to become even quieter when people would give me a hard time of being shy; now I either ignore them or inform them I prefer to not waste my socializing abilities on the likes of them.

I'm pretty outgoing. The only time I am shy is in a crowd of people I don't know. But give me even one person I connect with, and in minutes all shyness is out the window!

I'm neither shy nor outgoing. I find it easy to talk to anyone about anything. If a stranger talks to me I am perfectly fine. I'm just not the kind of person who likes to be the center of attention so I wouldn't really say I'm outgoing.

I voted -> 'Shy at first, then warm up after getting to know you'. It's easy for me to be outgoing online, with the anonymity. It's easy to say things online when you have time to put your thoughts in order before you type it out. But in person, with new people, this is so much harder - especially a room full of people.

I'm VERY OUTGOING!!! I will strike up a conversation with just about anyone! The funny thing is though, my BFF is REALLY SHY, so she gets so embarrassed when I will walk up to anyone and start talking!

I voted "shy at first but warm up later"

My family always said I'm shy and quiet. Been that for a long time, but meanwhile I've learned to open more. I had to force myself when I went for my job interview. Competed with 33 other girls to be offered the position of flight attendant. I really wanted the job, so... my mouth went open. Now it wasn't that hard, cause I was competing against French girls and French people have an accent. Don't know about Belgian people having a typical accent, cause we have 3 official languages (Dutch, French and German). But I have been told I sound Irish, British/English, American, Australian... I lived in Arkansas for 4 months and basically people thought I was from up north. With my job I've learned to be more talkative, though at times I can still be shy around new people...

No it doesn't, Mike.

My answer is: depends on the situation.

In some situations I'm shy. In others I'm not.

Ok Lisa, can you give examples of such situations?

I'll vote that I'm outgoing because I'm hard pressed to think of situations where I'm actually shy. Reticent, yes, but not shy.

I'm answering again. Interestingly enough, in the past few weeks I've had to work in a position where my job is to go up to people that I don't know - talk with them first - and try to make them feel comfortable. (YIKES!!!!) I was kind of surprised that although I consider myself to be shy - that I've been able to do this somewhat easily - but only because I pray before I meet people. I talk with people, chat, we laugh, hug, pray, pose for pictures, etc. This has been really a cool experience. Last week, I visited a church. Out of the blue - this woman at the other end of the table said "I know you have something to say - I know that you aren't shy - you are looking at everyone, engaging them ..." I thought it was kind of a strange for her to break it down like that ... but she was right I DID have something to say LOL (maybe a little too much!) Anyway, I think that most people feel shy on the inside, but on the outside, they might not appear to be.
