I ask this because I work at Wal-Mart and have a lot of customers who whine about the "black bars" on widescreen DVD's.

The worst part is, it's actually ruining movies for me as I used to not pay attention to that and would just get into the movie.

Nah...don't notice them and it's never bothered me. I've been buying Widescreen movies since 2000 though when I first got a DVD Player so... I guess I had a while to adjust. I actually can't stand full screen. Feels smaller in Full Screen. I remember watching Gladiator on VHS when it first came on video and the grandness of the colosseum and such was completely lost from what I had seen in theaters. It was the first movie I bought on DVD and I was surprised how much widescreen made a difference in keeping the grand scale of things. So I've never gone back to full screen since.

If your TV is big enough, you won't even notice.

Ask your customer if they're bothered by the curtains at the top and bottom of a movie screen when they go to the theater.

If they aren't then the black bars shouldn't bother them either.....they're getting the same, complete, picture....

Me either. I detest pan and scan - it should be banned.

Hey that, would make a catchy slogan - Ban pan and scan!

It's one of the reasons why I won't watch nor buy widescreen movies frequently.

I'm picky.

I don't notice them either.

If this is a regular occurrence, see if you can cue up the same movie on two tv's w/ full screen on one and widescreen on another. I did this with Harry Potter once on one tv - we loaded the widescreen version into the dvd player while we used our DVR to pause the fullscreen version that was on tv. I cued them up and hit play at the same time so we could switch back and forth to compare. The difference was really quite remarkable. If you can do that at your store, that will answer the question for a lot of people.

Though that would actually mean that WM provided some level of customer service.

You will accept them cutting out half the picture? How is that picky?

That's what I was thinking...it's a different definition of "picky"...

The Reason for the Bars on widescreen Dvd's is cause with widescreen Dvd's they are made the movie would look like in the Theatres. So the picher would shrink to the size of your tv.

Whoever decided that movie screens should be rectangular while TV screens should be square (and thus creating this problem) should be dragged out into the street and shot....

I notice them when the picture first starts, but they "disappear" as the story gets my attention. Fullscreen is a no-no in my house now because I do feel you miss so much of the story.

Fullscreen is like watching a race on tv. It focuses on the leaders only, and you miss the real racing that's happening back there in the battle for tenth place.

Well, when the first TVs came out, theatre screens had already been rectangular for years. BTW, those first TV screens were made from large ociliscope CRTs, meaning they were circular.....

Well, I usually watch movies in the dark so I don't notice the stripes. Also, since my TV is black the stripes just blend into the TV set and I don't notice them

I don't like them either. I guess I am a wiener. LOL!

I click zoom on my DVD player and that gets rid of most of the black lines.

maybe when I buy my big TV, it won't matter, but right now I don't like them.

I notice them at first but then I get into the movie. I have a big screen TV that is rectangular and I still notice them at first. I wonder why when they do windscreen for TV the bars are much smaller then on a movie?
