I don't know why I posted this except that it initially seemed "humorous" to me from the wording in the title "[someone] not enjoying prison" ...

I guess that words "enjoy" and "prison" seem ridiculous to use in the same sentence! Who WOULD enjoy prison? That's why it is prison!

On the other hand, I do think we need to pray greatly for the merciful and humane treatment of prisoners in the U.S. and their conditions. I have read that prison culture in the United States is like a modern day gladiator camp and torture chamber where disease, violence, rape (plenty of male-on-male), abuse, gang life/culture, fear, drugs, suicide, depression and other unpleasant things are the daily norm. It is sad in the most "modern" and "advanced" society in the history of the world that our prisons may be worse than those of Third World supposed "backwards" countries.

Perhaps this is a good segue into praying for prisoners and the U.S. penal system as a whole. It is downright frightening.

I have known people who work at state prisons. According to them the prisons are understaffed and underfunded. The guards do the best they can but, the prisoners pretty much run the place to suit themselves. There is just too much going on for the guards to be aware of everything.

That's interesting and also sad.

I feel like the prisons, if these things are true, are basically useless then. They don't get rid of bad criminals, don't reform them, and use up tax payer dollars. The weak prisoners - often those who committed non-violent and likely petty crimes - get abused by the bad ones. So the bad ones never learn their lesson. And if the bad ones run the jails/prisons, then they are not being punished and probably turn out worse when they get out. The not-so-bad ones have to survive just to get out and they themselves may not turn out much better.

It sounds weird, since I am against the death penalty in theory, but given a choice between putting prisoners in the current state of U.S. jails/prisons versus killing them, I might choose to give them the death penalty...Something I've thought about, but don't have an absolute opinion on.

I think jail was never meant to "house" people for so long. In the old days, people just were killed or had shorter sentences and lives. I think these days with people living so long and long prison/jail sentences being handed out, we are forced to house prisoners. That, combined with lack of funding, oversight, and staff and a unruly bad prison culture leads to a nightmare of a system.

I would support shorter sentences for non-violent offenders and a chance to leave early for good behavior. I'd also support segregation of violent versus non-violent offenders. And I'd also support a faster death sentence for those already on death row. I'm not sure I support the death penalty per se, but IF you HAVE to give it, maybe we should do it quicker to avoid "housing" issues?

Just some thoughts.

Respectfully,

Poor thing. Well, if you do the crime, you do the time. Prison is not a vacation resort.
