My nephew is going to turn 10, and I have no idea what to get him. I don't know what kids that age want.

Any advice at all for a really great gift would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Children's likes and dislikes change often. When in doubt, ask the parents for some ideas. They ought to be able to give a few pointers. I think when I was that age I probably liked video games and action figures, remote control cars.....

Rockets. The kind you take out in the back yard and blast off.

So he'll be ten... how buying him his first wallet (if he doesn't have one) and putting money in it... don't forget the birthday card!

More suggestions:

A kids bible such as the NIrV (New International Readers' Version) "The Adventure Bible"

An inexpensive watch --Target has several from $9.99 to $14.99 (and up).

A LEGO set.

Ask his Mom or siblings to find out what he already has, what he's wishing for and his favorite color.

Peace,
Anne

My munchkin is 12 now, but he's been into Legos for years and never tires of getting new "kits". Some of them can be rather pricey though, so if you can go in with others you can get him something pretty cool (they have aquaraiders, Star Wars and all kinds of neat things).

He also is into Tech Decks, which are finger skateboards. They have kits for those too, including itty bitty little tools to change out the wheels and such. He's been crazy about them for a few years.

He also really likes yoyos. He's got a little collection of various yoyos for doing different tricks, and a DVD with a yoyo champ demonstrating how to do tricks.

He likes his bicycle too, and one year I got him pegs for the wheels. You can also get grips for the handlebars so he can switch them out if he's into riding. A cool new helmet is good, or gloves (maybe my kid is just a little eccentric here? LOL), or they also sell the caps for the tires that are neat - one time he had red ones that blinked when he rode the bike.

The other thing he really likes and has been into for a few years is magic tricks. You can find all kinds of magic trick things at game stores.

Have fun shopping - and don't forget to buy HIM a present.

Gift certificate to Best Buy (maybe for $20 or $25).

It may not seem that personal, but there's tons of stuff they can put it towards (DVD's, CD's, video games, computer stuff, etc.). Let them choose their own gift. They like that.

Put it in a nice card.

A gift certificate is the ideal way to go. Provided you don't know exactly what he wants.

At age ten, I was becoming obsessed with Star Wars, because the Phantom Menace had just released, so I wanted a lightsaber instead of Legos or anything like that.

Find something he loves to do and then take him, maybe out to eat first.
Some one on one with him. Kids love attention.

When I was 10, I always wanted a Ferrari. I suppose, if you were willing to spend the money AND if you really wanted to get in his good-book.....

Thanks for the ideas! I like the rocket idea especially. And the Ferrari. Althoug that might wait until he's older.

When I wrote " rockets that blast off" in the back of my mind I was assuming that you would ask the parents. If you ask the boy's Dad he might be overly enthusiastic and then you'd have to buy a rocket for him too. You know how men are.

I like the idea of getting a rocket for the kid's dad too. His father is a buddy of mine, and I see him every day. My nephew only sees his dad a few times a year because he (kid) lives in San Fran, and his dad and I both live in NYC. They'd have a blast rocketing together. I think I'll look for the biggest one I can find, then get two.

Make sure you look for plastic cement. Our kit didn't have any, and we had a hard time finding some!

Thanks! I like the pirate theme too. I guess boys like anything that blows up though. I know I did!

I've decided also to get something that the kid can do with his dad. They live on opposite coasts and want to spend more time together.

This may be off the wall but what about dual web cams for your nephew and his father's computers. That way they can "see" each other more often when they talk.

You rule! I am going today to buy presents, and I'm adding this to the list. They will love being able to see and talk to each other!

Thank you so much. Now if I can just convince a small country I rule, perhaps I can be queen!
