What is this stuff and why has its' advertisements filled up my inbox?!?!! It's supposedly a "super food?" Isn't it pretty much just juiced up blueberries? Does anyone know where I can find more than advertising about this stuff? I mean if it's all that, I should be using it right?

If I were you, I would do your research, but this berry is really healthy, but also very expensive. http://www.acai-berry.com/ Your sister in Christ Jesus, Jessica

I know you can't put a price on your health but this stuff seems pretty pricey regardless of benefits. I'll keep researching.

Check wikipedia out. People have said that goji berries are a 'super food' too but from what I gather, research has shown that they're not a lot more 'super' than other berries! I wouldn't be inclined to buy them.

But the thing is that all of these juices are high in sugar and calories. Oh I had someone try to sell me on the mangosteen. I just use this as a rule of thumb. When it comes to fruits and veggies, try to get all of the "colors" in your diet. Sweet potatos instead of white, berries of every kind are awesome for you. Just get in your good mix and you don't need all that special stuff. I have been making smoothies lately and that is so great. Just throw it in the blender and let it go. Plus I add a scoop of soy protein to help balance it out. It is a great meal and an easy way to get your fruits.

Mrs, Tracy, If you have any specific recipes or can tell me the exact ingredients you use, I'd be most thankful. I'm just a little tired of what I've been eating and drinking and am in need of a change. quote:

I'm just a little tired of what I've been eating and drinking and am in need of a change. You know something, the exact same thing happened to me not so long ago.... I went to the library and got a whole bunch of cookery books out and just looked at the recipes. Some of them I tried, but due to the length of time I could borrow a book for, some I copied out to try later. I've got some great recipes now and am increasing the range of things I make. Most of the books I've borrowed have been healthy eating ones (I prefer them if they talk about the gi values) or ones where I know the chef pays attention to healthy eating. I've also gone to charity shops and bought books cheaply. I just bought three Mrs Beaton books and am going to try making rice bread tomorrow (will make a change from barley bread!).

rice bread? that sounds yummy...would love to hear how that turns out and then of course the recipe or what book you got it from or whatever. I hadn't thought of the thrift store idea to get cookbooks so I'll have to try that out.

It's not as I imagined, but it did turn out pretty good (even if I say so myself). It's from a Mrs Beeton book. I'll copy the recipe out tomorrow (book is downstairs). I've just got to figure out if I really want to make the rye bread that takes 4 days for the starter to be ready and then needs to be left to rise overnight.

My thoughts too! Rice bread 100g/4oz long-grain rice (NOT the easy cook kind) 450ml/3/4 pint milk 25g/1oz fresh yeast or 15ml/1 tbsp dried yeast 2.5ml/1/2 tsp sugar 450g/1 lb strong plain flour (I used barley bread flour) 10ml/2tsp salt 50ml/2fl oz lukewarm water beaten egg to glaze (optional) Add the rice to a small saucepan of boiling water. Bring back to boil, then drain. Put the rice back in the pan and add the milk. Bring to boil, stirring occasionally, then reduce the heat and partially cover the pan. Simmer for 15 mins. Blend the fresh yeast to a thin paste with the sugar and water. Set aside in a warm place until frothy. Alternatively, sprinke dried yeast over the water and set aside until frothy, then stir well. Mix the flour and salt in a bowl. Make a well in the centre and pour in the rice with the cooking milk. Mix in the flour with a wooden spoon. When the rice and flour are mixed evenly and cooled slightly (though it should still feel hot) add the yeast and combine to make a dough. Turn out onto a well-floured surface and knead until elastic. Place in a bowl and cover and leave in a warm place until doubled in size. Grease a baking sheet. Turn the dough out, knead briefly and divide in half. Shape into 2 long ovals and place on baking sheet. Cover loosely with lightly oiled cling film and leave in a warm place until well risen and spread into slightly flattened loaves. Meanwhile heat the oven to 220C/425F/gas 7 Brush with beaten egg if desired and bake for 35-45 mins. Bread should sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Cool. I will admit that the bottom of the pan was slightly burnt after cooking the rice, but it tasted fine (ie not burnt) so next time I will reduce the heat a bit. I used white rice when I made it, I will try it with brown next time. I was also a bit concerned that the dough seemed really dry before I added the yeast/water mix, but once added, it all came together. I'm guessing it could have all been mixed and kneaded in a mixer, but I did it by hand. quote:
thank you for giving me US measurements and such cause I would've really been lost I do generally give all measurements that I have. I know that Americans use cups (and I do sometimes if it's given) but some (Americans) don't seem to use anything but cups!

That's cause I never learned anything else...metrics were not taught when I was in school. Well, if they were...it was advanced math and science, which I had no part of. Generally, I just use my hands for measuring anyways. Brown rice with an oat flour might be good, too

Yeah, it might. I like staying fairly true to the recipe first time (to see how it should turn out!) and then experimenting. I guess the barley flour (which has other grains and kibbles in it) was the biggest difference ~ but I'm trying to use some flour up and that was the most suitable!

I bought some juice with acai berry in it. It was just ok. I bought that V8 fruit juice that's suppose to have several servings of fruit and veggies in it.

I would be careful with the V8 fruit juice. Check the ingredients to see if it has high fructose corn syrup. If that ingredient is in there, don't get it again. If you are going to go for V8, get the plain vegetable juice. It has 2 servings of vegetables in a cup. It may not taste as good as the fruit juice, but it is safer. I am still in sticker shock over the whole acai berry thing Baked the rice bread this weekend. Completely different than what I expected and it was totally yummy! My husband even liked it and he's not a big bread eater (the Philistine!)

Basically, just eat healthy, and yes, get a good diet full of antioxidants, but I don't think the acai berry is better than any other fruit. I just say, don't get overwhelmed by this thing. People tend to make a bigger deal from the acai than it is. Your sister in Christ Jesus, Jessica
