Can anyone explain this verse to me? For some reason, I have never understood what the Apostle means here. I feel so "duh" but it just is not being quickened to me. I looked at it in the ESV, also and still...nothing. And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. Romans 5:5 Thank you, so much!

Romans 5:1-"Therefore, both Jew and gentile having been justified by faith, we have expectancy with God in obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ 2 and our introduction into [His] Grace as an inheritance and exult in hope of the Glory of God. 3 Not only this but we can be encouraged in tribulations knowing adversity brings opportunity [to persevere] 4 and with perseverance [we can] affirm our character and with that character, hope 5 and the hope[to obey]does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us." It builds upon itself like James 1:2-4.

It is hope tt drives us on during the hard times. One thinks of the ridicule Job had to indure from his friends and his wife. So, we should not be ashamed because we are living on hope an not giving up, because, that in which we hope will not fail us.

ORIGINAL: CherishedbyGod Can anyone explain this verse to me? For some reason, I have never understood what the Apostle means here. I feel so "duh" but it just is not being quickened to me. I looked at it in the ESV, also and still...nothing. And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. Romans 5:5 Thank you, so much! Read it and the verses just before it in another translation, like the NIV. As we grow in the character of Christ through our sufferings, that character bears witness to the surety of the hope we have laid hold of in Christ. Just as circumcision was the 'sign' that God gave Abraham as the confirmation of the covenant and the promises he made with him (Genesis 17:2,11), so the circumcision of our hearts (the putting off of the sinful nature) is our sign that we also have entered into the sure hope and promises of God. Acting like Christ in this world shows us we belong to the truth and don't have to worry about the judgement and whether or not our hope is sure. And that sets our hearts at peace with him. "...love (Christ-like character) is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him." (1 John 4:17) "... let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 19This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence..." (1 John 3:18-19) Peter and Paul both tell us to 'make our calling sure' (remove all doubt about it's reality) by actively nurturing the righteous fruit of the Spirit within us: "...my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things (listed in previous verses), you will never fall, 11and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 1:10-11) "10God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. 11We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure." (Hebrews 6:10-11) "13Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus." (1 Tim. 3:13) The emerging character of Christ within us is our confirmation of the hope of salvation we have laid hold of in Christ. Just as Sarah's growing belly was confirmation to Abraham that God was keeping his promise to him, so we also have the promised Son growing within us becoming more and more evident in our character, eagerly waiting with expectancy and hope for the Day that he will be fully birthed in us: "My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you..." (Galatians 4:19) I won't go on and on with this (it's one of my favorite subjects), but talking about this is like opening up a fire hydrant for a drink. God has planted the seed of his kingdom in us and we find hope and encouragement of what is to come when we see it taking root and bearing fruit in godly character.

2Ti 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. 2Ti 1:13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. does this verse in 2nd Timothy help explain?
