I need help.

January 1st will be our 10th anniversary. I want to do something special, but have no idea what.

We had talked about doing a cross-country train trip, but that was before kids 4 and 5 came along. #4 is too young to be left for that long and #5 is nursing and can't be left at all. Maybe for the 15th...anniversary, not kid.

And then there was Brian's accident and he's not able to do too much. So now I have no idea. But I know that if we don't do SOMEthing, I will be more than a bit sad. It's been such a hard year, and not an easy 10 years, in all honesty. I feel like we need to celebrate this, but I just don't know what I want to do.

So...if you were me, what would you do? The baby has to come with us, and we have a "budget" of about $200-300.

So do you want to stay the night somewhere take Esther with you and leave the other kids somewhere? Or you want to get esther minded and go out for dinner, or do you want the kids to be involved?

What exactly can't Brian do?

I'd like to go somewhere and take Esther with us. She'll be 4 months old then.

Brian can't walk and it's hard to find places that are easy for him to get into. I guess if we go somewhere I don't want to necessarily be stuck in the room, KWIM?

Plus with it being winter, it will be harder for him to get around in his wheelchair even. I'm anticipating parking lots will be very difficult.

I have thought of booking the place we stayed at the night we were married. We didn't have a honeymoon, just the one night my parents gave us. They got us a room with a jacuzzi and we stayed in it the whole time we watched a movie...and then almost fell on the floor getting out because we had it so hot. LOL I'm not sure if he'll be able to get in the jacuzzi though and if he can't...then there is nothing near there to do.

Hmm that will be difficult, but I am sure there are plenty of places you could go to, people in wheelchairs must get out also. Is there maybe a website for disabled travellers or something in your area or a place you want to go? Here in Australia every major region has travel websites and agencies that you can go to for free info on what's in the region to do, places to visit etc. How far did you want to go away?

Not more than 2 hours, I think. And not north to the Adirondacks, not that time of year. We might get stuck up there. LOL

Why did we get married in January again?

I never realized how handicapped unfriendly the world is before now.

Donna - is there a day-trip train ride you could do? That would be super cute, considering you'd talked about it

You could pack a nice lunch - gourmet foods or all your favorite foods... OR maybe a food to represent each year you've been married?
That might be dumb, and you'd have to tell him what each thing stood for, but if it were US we'd find that cool because we love food

Almost every hotel/motel has a handicapped accessible room if you request it. That would make at least that part of your stay easier.

That's a good idea jessica, taking a small train ride (they would have to cater for wheelchairs) then stay in a nice hotel somewhere.

Go to a nice hotel with a spa and order some room service?

Go to a bed and breakfast?

My husband and I go to theme parks for our anniversary, but I don't think that would work for you

Hummmm, winter is hard for anything outdoors unless it happens to be an unusually warm day. I actually went to New York City for New Years 2005 and it didn't snow at all for the week I was there.

Donna, I've just been poking around your state's tourism site, and they have a lot of different "getaway" packages, there's exploring, romance etc. Is there anything there that would interest you guys?
Some of the hotels are in a city and most hotels like that would have accessible rooms for sure, you would just have to ask upon booking.

Are you interested in going out of state, or is that too far?

In-door go karting (unsure if this is possible for Brian but it might be a fun seated activity)
indoor mini golf (some are wheelchair accessible)
day train trip
stroll around a mall or museum
overnight to a hotel
just staying home with kids gone for an evening...nice meal, movie, talking, games
going to a movie theater for a double feature (having someone take the baby for the shows and just taking a break to nurse and have lunch) or shopping
sleigh ride (horse drawn kind)

It was our 10th anniversary this year too Donna. I had a lot of hopes for a great getaway. We did a lot of talking about it. Then our son began having seizures and it got to the point where with his medications, lack of seizure control, and special diet it's almost impossible to leave him. I think we ate steak at home for our anniversary this year and fell asleep early.

It may not be the big celebration you were hoping for. It's okay to grieve for that. Maybe 10 will be the small celebration and 11 or 12 will be the big one.

I know I had to grieve first before God could remind me of how blessed I was in all I didn't lose this year. I'm not sure you'll find exactly what you want, but I do know that you are blessed and I pray that God will make the time special to you no matter what you can and can't do.

Donna, I would suggest doing something that you did on your first date, or something you did while dating that you don't get to do much now. Or, sort of reliving your honeymoon.

Also, since it is so cold/snowy/icy there at that time of year... you could just go to dinner with the agreement that when it's warmer, and when Brian is able to ambulate better, then you could do something a little more "spectacular".

David and I married in June. Seemed perfectly sensible to me... I lived in Pa, it was spring then, and things were a nice temp and looked pretty outside.

We live in Texas....... by June it's normally approaching 100* or something close to it. We don't do much "fun" stuff on our actual anniversary, but save that for a spring or fall trip. =) (or both!)

Trains...nothing that time of year. There are really neat fall train rides into the Adirondacks. But not in the winter.

Amusement parks...I doubt Brian will be able to go on wild rides ever again.

I wouldn't mind going to PA or Canada. Niagara Falls would be pretty in the winter, but it's probably out of our budget. Maybe not though...it would be off season, I think.

Just staying home without kids would be nice, but we'd have to hide the van and leave all the lights off (not a problem

) or people would know we were home. A lot of people we know drive by our house all the time and like to drop in unannounced.

A new possibility...friends of our are getting married in March and have asked us to go with them on their honeymoon. They want to go to North Carolina, visit some aquarium and some other places. It does sound like fun. It just seems a bit weird going together with someone on their honeymoon.

We would get separate rooms, obviously. LOL And these friends are a little older than us and already have a 6 year old together (God is AWESOME and has freed him from alcoholism and brought them back together!!!).

I asked her if she was really serious that they wanted us to go with them, and they are. I know we would have a blast with them.

Actually, the AAA rate for that hotel is cheaper than the travelzoo one. Glad I checked...definite possibility, especially since I don't care for crowds and January is definitely the off season.

We've stayed at the Fallsview ... it is wonderful. Valet parking, all rooms face the Falls, everything is accessible (when we went, they had a bridal party there and the best man was in a wheelchair) You'd probably be okay if you were planning on arriving on the 1st, but if you are thinking about ringing in the New Year there, you may want to rethink. Every year they have a HUGE event and even have a ball drop there to welcome in the year. It ends up being shoulder-to-shoulder, standing room only, etc. And most of the hotels end up being completely sold out. (I used to work for several hotel reservation companies) But honestly, for Niagara Falls, you couldn't ask for a nicer hotel than that.

I'd even be willing to make the 3 hour drive to the Falls to cuddle Esther while the two of you have a nice candlelit dinner.

The special deal is not available the week after Christmas anyway. We also can't change Nick's visitation schedule right now, so we're looking at January 6th (Tues) to go, if we do that.

You might even get a cheaper rate on the 6th

We have the same problem with anniversary weather. We got married February 3, which is when the weather down here gets the worst. Usually we get in snow when we are out of town celebrating (but it doesn't matter

) but this year we sat out part of our trip hiding in a hotel basement from the tornadoes in Nashville. Not what we were expecting.

I think Niagra Falls sounds neater than grits

Well, poo...now can't go that week because we have two court dates...the 5th for visitation and the 8th for child support. Maybe the next week...
